Stagecoach Dispatch is inspired by the legendary Stagecoach Mary.
According to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, the six-foot tall fearless mail carrier Mary Fields was born into slavery either 1832 or 1833. In 1895, in her early sixties, Mary obtained a contract by the United States Post Office Department to be a Star Route Carrier and delivered the mail in the harsh weather of northern Montana. Mary was the first African American woman and the second woman to receive a Star Route contract from the United States Post Office Department.
Stagecoach Mary carried letters, packages and printed news that stitched communities together. In her honor, our newsletter has launched this Stagecoach Dispatch to invite us to be our best fearless selves and do the same.
