Danielle Eliska Lyle is Detroit. The embrace of the historical and cultural mecca is what homegrown artists have to wrap around their shoulders whenever they rep their city. And Danielle wears it well. She knew of her love for film from a very early age. She pursued the art form as one of dynamic and demonstrative imagery + story. A self-described “black archivist,” Danielle approaches her craft from all sides as a director, screenwriter, playwright, poet, author, instructor and now a CEO healing our spirits with a new line of herbal teas. Is she a superhero? Black women are often referred to as such. Danielle’s latest film, Shield, introduces audiences to an actual superhero who rescues a beautiful young girl from the perils of foster care. It’s the perfect story for this indie filmmaker who wears her community on her sleeve. And we are here for it!
I have to say, Danielle’s crowdfunding road from concept to principle photography was one of the most professional presentations I’ve seen from an indie partnership. Producer Lauren Sowa of Form & Pressure Films teamed up with Danielle and stayed on mission. Form & Pressure Films tells “stories that inspire and provoke thought, while encouraging diversity and equality on set and on screen.” Yes! More of that! You’ll also see Lauren, who is a talented actor, on screen in the film. And I first met Lauren when she interviewed me for her photography series on women in the industry. See how connected the indie creatives can be? There is no doing this work alone. When we come together, we fly.
